Please, We’re Not A Choir – We’re a Chorus!
Thirteen short years ago, a number of women who were former Sweet Adeline singers decided it was time to bring a cappella music- barbershop style - to Lethbridge. The group performed in the Bridge City Chorus show in 1994 and began honing their skills at lodges, nursing homes and carol fests. In November 1998 the group chartered as Southern Accord Chorus – and these members of Sweet Adelines International have never looked back!
Through its affiliation with Sweet Adelines International, Southern Accord Chorus offers women the opportunity to develop musically and vocally with extensive training in the techniques necessary to achieve that unique and wonderful sound heard only in the rich, close harmonies of barbershop music. Fun, friendship and education are the hallmarks of singing with any barbershop chorus and Southern Accord Chorus is no exception.
Lethbridge has had a long and illustrious tradition of choral music but most of its citizens are not aware of a small niche occupied by a very special type of music. If singing Bach or Beethoven holds little appeal, then maybe a cappella (unaccompanied) 4 part harmony – barbershop style - is something you should consider. It provides a refreshing alternative to classical music and its unique harmony lends itself to music from any era – traditional melodies, today’s ballads, showtunes, gospel and even jazz.
